Louise Nevelson (1900 - 1988)
My first awareness of Nevelson's art was in 1973 when I attended the University in Illinois. The "found" objects she integrated into her massive pieces opened a world of opportunity for me. To look for my materials on the ground, in places where refuse would collect, anywhere a cast off could be seen for another potential life, this idea allowed me to create with limited funds, and her art process enabled me to see my work with out the hierarchy of materials one thought necessary to make art. Now, as for her unique individual ness, that is the mantra I have learned from her power of believing in herself.
Thank You Ms. Nevelson

"I fell in love with black; it contained all color. It wasn't a negation of color...Black is the most aristocratic color of all...You can be quiet, and it contains the whole thing."
